Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

Now that the days are shorter and the South Florida weather is finally a little bit cooler, you may be noticing some not-so-fun changes to your skin! For example, your skin may feel tight and drier than usual or duller and lackluster in appearance. This is because just as you change your clothes with changing temperatures you should do the same with your skincare routine.

Even in South Florida, where winter weather tends to be warmer than most, the change from shorts and lightweight moisturizers to long sleeves and heavy-duty face creams can still take a toll on your skin and overall complexion. Below are tips we recommend at Stars Skincare Med Spa for preventing, soothing and curing dry winter skin.

Prep the Skin and Home

When temperatures cool off, a hot bath or shower is super enticing, especially if you’ve spent the day outdoors soaking up the desirable South Florida weather. However, hot baths and showers can dissolve the protective barrier on the skin which will eventually lead to dryness. Applying oil before a hot bath or shower will help hydrate your skin and protect your barrier. Additionally, closing the bathroom door will trap in the humidity and increase moisture levels in the air.

Stay Hydrated

The drier the air, the drier the skin. Typically, we associate ‘staying hydrated’ with the hot, summer months. However, water actually evaporates off the surface of the skin much faster and easier in the drier and colder months. To prevent dryness, drink an extra glass or two of water every day.

Avoid Harsh Cleansers

Make the switch to gentler facial cleansers during the colder months to avoid stripping the skin. For your body, you might normally use your favorite fragranced body wash, but fragrances and additives actually strip the skin of its natural oils, which are needed to protect overall moisture. In the winter, it is best to switch to something more gentle to help protect your skin’s moisture barrier.

Switch to Heavy Moisturizers

Moisturizing your skin is crucial for keeping it hydrated throughout the winter. Apply a very thick moisturizer immediately after you dry off from a bath or shower and then one more time during the day to help keep your skin feeling smooth and supple. Additionally, applying a face and body oil prior to the cream-based moisturizer will help trap in the hydration and prevent your skin from drying out.
